MEETING PLACE: Classroom session at the Audubon Center at Chatfield; field trips to birdwatching sites around Denver: Chatfield, Barr Lake and Castlewood Canyon State Parks, Wheat Ridge greenbelt, and Genesee Mountain Park.
DESCRIPTION: Voted “Best of Denver!” two decades ago and still going strong. Colorado’s premier (and most entertaining) birding couple teaches the art and science of birding like no one else. Learn bird identification, choosing binoculars and field guides, and much more. Visit a variety of habitats and some of the best birding spots in the Denver metro area. Become observant and develop a practiced eye and ear. Make new friends and change the focus of your time outdoors. You can make up any field trips that you miss during future fall or spring class sessions—you’ll meet people from more than one previous class repeating the fun.

Pre-registration is NOT required.
MEETING PLACE: Parking lot at the Audubon Center at Chatfield. The Audubon Center is located on Waterton Road, 4.4 miles south of C-470 and Wadsworth. (driving directions)
DESCRIPTION: We will hike along the South Platte River and look for winter birds such as raptors, ducks and seed-eating perching birds. We always find surprises. Dress in layers for the weather. Bring binoculars, field guides, water and a snack.

Meeting Place: Meet at Rocky Mountain BIrd Observatory. Exit I-76 at Bromley Land; go east about 1/4 mile and turn right (south) on Lark Bunting Lane, to end of road. This is a ten-mile, all day hike around the lake. State Parks pass required.

Celebrate International Migratory Bird Day at Audubon Bird Banding Station

Description: Take a short ike toward the east to the bird banding station to observe the banding process. Birds that have just made the migratory journey from southern are in town to next in the cottonwoods along the South Platte. No registration and no fee.

ATLAS TRAINING TRIP - Chatfield State Park

Meeting Place: Plum Creek Parking Area, Chatfield State Park. From C470 go south on Santa Fe Drive to Titan Road, left on Titan Road, 1 mile, right on Roxborough Park Road to the East gate to the park. After you enter the park, continue right to a T, right at the T to the parking lot. State Parks pass required.
Description: Learn the rudiments of Atlas bird watching, techniques and how to adopt your own block.
COAL CREEK ATLAS BLOCK - trips meet at 6:30 am

Description: Cottonwood/willow riparian systems along Senac Creek and Coal Creek. A portion of the block is within the State Land Board's Lowry Range requiring all participants sign liability waivers.

Description: Block is 15 miles into the foothils and includes Meyer Ranch and James Newton Park. Block is 10 square miles - different trips will explore different parts of the block.

Description: Block is within a private ranch on East Cherry Creek, riparian areas, grasslands and ponderosa pine habitat.

Description: Native-scaping will give you drought tolerant, wildlife friendly, and colorful flowers. Tips will be provided, myths dispeled and lots of information distributed. Take a photo tour of plants and put your shopping list together for the June 7 plant sale.

Summer Science Camps
All camps are presented in collaboration with Thorne Ecological Institute's Natural Science School. Classes run from 8:30 am through NOON each day. Each week long session is $180 per child. Register at www.thorne-eco.org or by calling 303-499-3647.

Description: A different avian adventure each day. Visit bird banding station, test your skills, and discover the amazing abilities of birds.
BIODIVERSITY BLITZ (ages 9 - 11)
June 16 - 20, 8:30 - NOON each day
Thorne Ecological Institute's Natural Science School
Description: Explore the natural areas around Waterton Canyon while leading scientific surveys of all living things in the area.
BIKING AND BIRDING (ages 9 - 11)
June 23 - 27, 8:30 - NOON each day
Thorne Ecological Institute's Natural Science School
Description: Pedal and explore the bike paths of Waterton Canyon. We'll stop to identify birds and their habits, keep a journal and learn how to use field guides. Students need a tuned bike, helmet, two replacement bicycle tubes, filled with tire slime, plenty of water and a healthy snack. Average distance traveled per day is 6 miles. All levels of biking.

Presenters: Scientists and volunteers will lead hikes and ive presentations to help visitors identify species found in Chatfield State Park.
