Sharp-tailed Grouse Lek and the Joy of Prairie Birding
April 22 @ 4:00 am - 4:00 pm
Join us for an opportunity to witness Sharp-tailed Grouse dancing on a Colorado lek. We will listen and scope view from a county road before dawn using our cars as a blind. Low light and distance from the leks make difficult conditions for photography but satisfactory personal viewing. After dawn, we bird the adjoining grasslands for prairie birds such as Chestnut-collared and McGown’s longspurs and Mountain Plovers before making our way south to Denver. We will visit wetlands and ponds for water birds and migrating songbirds. We may find a lunch stop on the homeward trek, but packing edibles for breakfast and lunch is a good idea.
Meeting Place: Gator’s Travelyn Motel front parking lot, 4 a.m. 515 W. 7th St. Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, 82082. Phone: 307-245-3226. Exit #401 off I-80, left on Parson St., right on W. 7th.
Leaders: Mackenzie Goldthwait, Doug Kibbe
Registration required: $25/Friends member, $30/non-member
Note! Pine Bluffs, Wyoming is about a two-hour drive from Denver taking I-25 north to Cheyenne then going east on I-80. Leaders intend to stay Saturday night in Pine Bluffs for the early morning meeting. We will be willing to carpool/caravan up to Pine Bluffs across the Pawnee National Grassland on April 21, Saturday afternoon if you contact us. Alternatively, you may meet us for dinner if you plan stay in Pine Bluffs Saturday night. There is an all-night truck stop near Gator’s Travelyn Motel for early coffee and breakfast burritos.
