Sparrows and Early Summer Chorus at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal
June 7 @ 6:00 am - 11:00 am
In these early days of summer, come discover this rich habitat in Denver’s backyard. Our focus will be the many sparrows and other songbirds that thrive in the arsenal’s grasses, scrub, and trees. We’ll witness several kinds of sparrows, including grasshopper, lark, vesper, Brewer’s, and song, defending their newly established territories, along with refining chipping ad clay-colored migrants and perhaps, yes, if we’re lucky a wandering Cassin’s. In their vicinity, we’ll also enjoy various buntings, larks, wrens, warblers, vireos, doves and swallows that create the chorus of early summer. We will start at dawn because the day heats up quickly on the prairie. Do bring plenty of water and sunscreen, a broad-brimmed hat, sturdy walking shoes for a 4-5 mile hike over level terrain, and a desire to delve deep into the sounds of June. Best suited for intermediate birders.
Meeting Place: Rocky Mountain Arsenal Visitor Center, 6550 Gateway Rd, Commerce City, CO 80022.
Leader: Rebecca Laroche, ASGD Master Birder Candidate
