It’s time for our Fall Celebration, an exciting evening with ASGD members and friends. Learn about our accomplishments and future plans. Then, join author and bird sound expert Nathan Pieplow who will guide us on a journey to decode bird calls, songs, and other sounds. The sounds of birds are a language, carrying messages from one bird to another. To understand the language, and decode the messages, Nathan has devised a system that lets you identify bird sounds without having to memorize them. The Peterson Field Guide to Bird Sounds lets you look up sounds as you would look up words in the dictionary. Nathan’s clear, practical instructions for visualizing sounds will make you a better listener.

$15/member; $20/non-member

Growing up in South Dakota, Nathan started identifying bird songs by studying the classic “Birding By Ear” field guides in the Peterson series.  It wasn’t until 2003, when he faced the frustrations of studying sounds for his first trips to Mexico and Costa Rica, that he became dedicated to finding new and better ways to learn, describe, and catalog bird sounds.  For Nathan, to learn bird sounds, he wanted more resources: more recordings, better glossaries, deeper discussions.  So he set out to create his own resources.
