Birding the Texas Rio Grande Valley with Norm Lewis

January 18 - 25, 2003
by Sue Schulman

The Rio Grande Valley was the place to be this January. Eight hardy Denver Audubon travelers had an awesome birding trip as Norm Lewis led us every day to "life list" birds! Highlights included a surf scoter, zone-tailed hawk, three gray hawks, green kingfisher, spotted sandpiper (riding an inner tube on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande River!!), three species of orioles - Audubon's, altamira and hooded, a vermilion flycatcher and ferruginous pygmy-owl. The group ran up a grand total of 166 species that were seen and/or heard.
