2017 Annual Audubon Christmas Count

All birdwatchers, whether beginner, intermediate, or advanced, are invited to join us on one or more Christmas Bird Counts.  Taking place across the nation since 1900, data collected by observers allows researchers and conservation biologists to study the long-term health and status of bird populations.  A 15 mile radius circle is divided into sections, with different parties assigned to each section.  Contact Count Compiler (for Denver, Denver Urban, and Douglas County CBC) for section leaders, meeting times, locations and to join a team.

The Douglas County Circle of the Annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 7:30am to 4pm. We have about 12 teams that go out and cover different areas of Douglas County. Birders of all abilities are encouraged to sign up for a team. Information is available through the Audubon CBC website. If you would like to be placed on a team please email Nancy Crews at: NBCrews46@msn.com. Final deadline to register is Tuesday, December 26, 2017.

Walking distance and difficulty of the trails will vary with the count area, and the elevations will range from approximately 5,000 to 8,000 feet.  Many areas involve mostly driving, with birding stops along the way.

Potluck: There will be a compilation of Birds and a Chili potluck after the count.  The chili potluck costs $2.50 and birders are asked to bring a dish to share.  The chili potluck will be held at the Roxborough Park Foundation Community Center at 6237 Roxborough Drive, Littleton, CO 80125.

Denver Urban Christmas Count
Monday, January 1, 2018

A holiday tradition – everyone welcome: beginners, intermediate, and advanced. The more eyes we have, the more birds we see. And we like to encourage people to get involved. Start the New Year with a half day or whole day effort – a good way to start 2018! The count covers a circle with a 15-mile diameter that includes the Platte River from north city limits to Mississippi, west to Buckley Field & Rocky Mountain Arsenal. For better coverage, this year we divided Aurora into three parts.
Potluck: 5:00pm after the count, place TBA. Call Urling -303-814-2723 to RSVP and enjoy chili potluck, Urling’s brownies, & your salad, dessert, veggie, or finger foods. Feel free to come even if you don’t RSVP.
