Visiting Denver on a solo trip was a pivotal moment in Jane’s life. She met her then hiking guide, now partner on a hiking trip which unraveled her love for the great outdoors.
Originally from Toronto, Canada, Jane has a B.Sc. in human nutrition from McGill University and was a registered dietitian for a decade before she became burnt out and left the healthcare industry. She discovered birds when a friend took her birding and identified over 30 species mostly by ear! Jane was blown away by her talent and was hooked when she heard the sweet flute-like tune of the Western Meadowlark. She travelled the Rocky Mountains in a trailer with her partner, volunteered with local organizations including Volunteers for Outdoors Colorado and Wildlands Restoration Volunteers, further deepening her passion and appreciation for Mother Nature.
Birding is an important mindfulness practice for Jane and she loves to spread the joy of birds through education and awareness. She volunteered with Denver Audubon, Environment for the Americas, worked at Wild Birds Unlimited, and operates her own bird tour company, Birding with Jane. She’s a co-organizer for the Denver Front Range chapter of the Feminist Bird Club, leads Mindful Birding courses at the Denver Botanic Gardens, and guides outings with Lafayette Open Space. She’s an advocate for accessible and inclusive birding, how birding can be a mental health resource, and a way for people to be in community. Volunteerism has always been a part of Jane’s life and she’s thrilled to work at Denver Audubon as volunteer coordinator.
She loves to play Wingspan and when she’s not obsessing about birds, she likes to swim, hike, salsa and bachata dance, learn Spanish, speed puzzle, and go to concerts with friends.
